What is Reiki?

Reiki is an ancient form of healing believed to have spread through Tibet, China and India a few thousand years ago. Seers in the Orient studied energies and developed a system of sounds and symbols which activate universal life energy for healing. It was rediscovered in the late 19th Century in Sanskrit teachings from the days of the Buddha by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Christian and theology teacher.

The word Reiki is Japenese, “Rei” means Universal and “ki” means “Life Energy”, the same as the Chinese “Chi” or Indian “Prana”. Reiki is the vital energy which flows through all living things which can be activated for the purpose of healing, working on all levels – spiritual, physical, mental and emotional.

Although it has its roots in ancient Buddhist teachings, Reiki is not a religion or a faith system.

It was introduced to the western world in the middle of this century. Reiki is becoming increasingly popular worldwide, and a form of healing now recognised by private health care and enlightened general practitioners.
